Holiday Bone Treats Campaign Raises Awareness About Osteosarcoma

During the holiday season, FETCH a Cure launches a bone cancer awareness and fundraising campaign called Holiday Bone Treats. This campaign is in honor of Hannah Holland, our co-founder’s Saint Bernard, who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma of the skull in July of 2006. Little information about her condition was available at the time, and what her pet parent, Mike Holland, could find was hard to understand. So, Mike teamed up with Ryan Traylor and Tonie Stevens to create FETCH a Cure, a non-profit designed to raise awareness, to educate, and to provide pet owners with greater access to information about pet cancer, senior care, and treatment options.

With Hannah’s prognosis of only two months left, Mike set out to do as much as he could to help Hannah fight this disease through various treatment measures. Hannah fought against the odds and lost her battle with osteosarcoma two years later. Her spirit lives on in the mission of FETCH and is at the forefront of our annual Holiday Bone Treats campaign.

Osteosarcoma accounts for approximately 5% of all canine tumors, but is by far the most common bone tumor found in dogs. It is a malignant tumor of the bone and can develop in any bone, but most often occurs in bones bordering the shoulder, wrist, and knee.

The Holiday Bone Treat “rein-dog” displays and accompanying treats are a visual reminder of the warning signs of pet cancer; they also serve as a conversation piece and educational visual aid for businesses to give to clients while they are checking in and out at the reception desk. The wooden “rein-dogs” are in the shape of FETCH a Cure’s signature steel dogs, and they are decorated with bells and antlers to signify the festive season.
